Microscopic examination, Salt Spray Cass Testing, and bend testing were performed on 22 plating samples provided by a number of vendors. The samples provided by these vendors varied considerably and differed as follow:

  • Single layer chrome
  • Two part chrome
  • Hard chrome and soft chrome
  • Chrome over nickel
  • Chrome over bronze
  • Nickel
  • Plating over induction-hardened rods
  • Different methods of applying the plating

Results indicate the only acceptable plating is chrome over nickel. Nickel seals off the underlying steel to prevent corrosion, and the chrome will provide the hardness to prevent wear and resist physical damage. Based on this testing, it is suggested a plating spec as follows be considered:

  • .003" to .005" Nickel over Base Steel
  • l.003" to .005" Hard Chrome over Nickel

CORROSION RATING VISUAL SCALESALT SPRAY CASS TEST

Observations of all plating samples were made daily during the Salt Spray CASS Testing and assigned a relative number based on the amount of red rust coverage:Rating Number Description

  • No rust or discoloration
  • Slight discoloration
  • Less than 1% rust
  • 1 to 5% rust
  • 5 to 10% rust
  • 10 to 25% rust
  • 25 to 50% rust
  • 50 to 75% rust
  • 75 to 99% rust
  • 100% rust
